a.k.a the case of teeny tiny crop top
The 80-something-degree hot and heavy sauna weather in New York City is terrible, especially on those days where you just don't feel like sporting tiny crop top. Unfortunately, you can't beat the heat (I walked out in jeans and a "light" full sleeve shirt the other day and didn't even last 20 minutes) or can you?
My approach: fake it 'till you make it.
In this look I wore a loose vintage sheer top with my tiny American Apparel crop top (made even tinier courtesy of extensive dryer time) giving it a cool, complex volume without the added weight. I paired these two together because of their similar necklines, which is something you should keep in mind when you wear a sheer top and don't know what to wear inside, this gives the otherwise very dissimilar pieces a sense of uniformity. I also wore the skort of the season from Topshop, which did this outfit three favors:
- The high rise fit covered my stomach and allowed me to show off the tiniest part of my abdomen, just before my waist.
- It also allowed me to tuck in the sheer top, which would've been all over the place otherwise.
- The looseness of the shorts combined with the symmetry of the skirt made me look tidier than I deserved credit for.
There you have it, I sorta beat the unwavering weather and you can sorta do the same. Click on the links, find your own sheer style and tag us on Instagram @styledevotees with your #summerfunk.
*Bonus: Adding a neckline accentuating necklace (the one I wore is from forever21) will add to the effect.
More sheer tops can be found at Helmut Lang, Revolve, NastyGal, UrbanOutfitters and American Apparel. Also shown are these staple summer sandals from Gap (sold out, similar here and here) and the hair tie on my wrist from Goody -sorry, it is really hot out.
A huge shoutout to a good friend and an aspiring photographer, Vedika Sijapati, for taking these beautiful shots.
